What is ‘Glasgow Going for Gold’ campaign?

The Glasgow Going for Gold Campaign is part of Glasgow’s work towards achieving the Sustainable Food Places Gold Award.  The campaign will encourage and enable people across the city to learn more about and participate in a range of food-related activities and opportunities that are helping make the local food system in Glasgow better for everyone. The campaign will bring individuals, communities  and organisations together to be part of Glasgow’s own Gold Award ambition in the same year Glasgow is hosting the Commonwealth Games. It will concentrate on the following 2 strands of activity:

1) Good Food Communities: empowering communities and people of all ages to learn about, celebrate and get involved in food related activities in Glasgow.

2) Healthy Food for All: working to ensure that more people can access and enjoy nutritious food in a dignified and equitable way.

What is the Gold Award?

Glasgow is one of the 120 members of the UK-wide Sustainable Food Places (SFP) network. In November 2023 Glasgow was awarded Sustainable Food Places Silver award recognising its success in taking a joined up, holistic approach to building a better and fairer food system, and making significant progress on a range of key food issues.  Glasgow has now been invited to apply for a SFP Gold Award, to reflect and build on the good work that has gone on in Glasgow over the years.

Why are we doing this?

Food is important for people’s health, wellbeing, culture and enjoyment. Through food people can make new connections, link with their communities and share knowledge. Glasgow is the most culturally diverse city in Glasgow and the food landscape in our city is just as varied. Glasgow’s multicultural food heritage has been shaped by its many immigrants and, of course, links to the Commonwealth.

However, not everyone has equal access to healthy, sustainable, culturally appropriate food. Through this campaign we want to highlight many amazing projects taking place to address this. We want to inspire people to learn about food and get involved in food related activities; ‘Glasgow Going for Gold’ campaign will showcase available food-related events and other food-related opportunities happening in Glasgow.  The project will celebrate the healthy, sustainable and culturally diverse food available across Glasgow and bring people together over delicious food.

In 2026 we will be running lots of events and an awareness campaign for everyone in Glasgow to learn more about their food system and how they can be involved in supporting the campaign to become a Gold Sustainable Food City.

Who is it for/How Can I get involved?

Glasgow Going for Gold campaign is meant for everyone in Glasgow – communities, children, families, young people, adults, older people and organisations.

To kick off the campaign we have put together a Bucket List of ‘Fun food filled activities for the summer’with the help of some of our partners and some primary school students (special thanks to Sacred Heart Primary school P3 students!). This will list family-friendly food activities that you can do over the summer. Try ticking off the whole list!

We have also compiled an Events Calendar of food-related events happening over the summer. If you feel there is an event that should be included, please let us know by emailing info@goodfoodforall.co.uk or completing this form.
